My K3 is Buggy. September 4, 2010 "Leo" (Maryland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered the K3 Wifi only option, and I have been using it and reading it since it arrived on August 27Th.
What I love about the new device:
1. It is truly lighter, thinner, and more attractive looking.
2. The 5 way motion controller is a much needed improvement from the K2.
3. The contrast is much better.
What I dislike/why I have to return it:
1. It keeps rebooting itself, and in the process it deletes all of my books then replacing them out of order.
2. It is tedious downloading all my books from the K2 to the K3. I mean really, those books should have already been on there, or it should be one easy step rather then going to each book and individually downloading it. Just tedious.
3. My page numbers keep getting lost, and I had to keep searching for the correct page number.
4. The back splash when turning the page is very distracting for me when I am trying to read.
5. Those creepy old dead people are still on the screen.
6. Once opening a book, that book does not go to the beginning of the home screen. I'm not sure if it is because my device is defective or if this is the way Amazon made the new K3.
7. Yes, there are still location numbers, rather than page numbers on the K3
I am reviewing the K3 based on my experience only. I can't say others have the same problems or issues that I am having.
A well designed, well crafted product September 4, 2010 rc (Maryland, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Kindle 3 is a well designed, well crafted product -- a rarity. I don't typically give 5 star ratings because there are no perfect products and there are almost always significant and unnecessary negatives. But, that's not the case here.
I agree with the many other positive reviews which have gone into detail, so I'll skip and skimp somewhat.
The screen is clear and easy to read. When I first opened the box, the displayed screen saver appeared as a printed film to be removed. The paper-like quality is a pleasure to read. And, of course, the screen is exceptional in bright light such as sunlight.
What could be improved? Better resolution and color.
The new iPhone's retina display shows amazing detail for such a small screen, 3.5". This is due to the large number of pixels, 640 x 960. The Kindle 3 screen has 600 x 800 pixels, but less densely packed in a larger 6" screen. The screen size affects how close you need to be to the screen. But, the pixels affect what can be shown without panning or without loss of detail. So, while the Kindle 3 can display similar detail to an iPhone 4, if it had even higher resolution, with a similar pixel density, it could display even more.
Though the black and white display is most suitable for fonts and even most images are crisp, clear and pleasing, color would be welcome. Color would provide an improvement for graphs, illustrations and images of course.
Are these negatives for the K3? No. The current pearl display is no doubt eInk state of the art technology or nearly so. The technology can and will be improved -- that's all. Do I feel disappointed by the display? Absolutely not! I'm wow'ed by the display.
What else... the web browser. I had hoped that web browsing would be decently usable. It is much better than that.
Most web pages display properly. Page load time is about that of dial-up. It could be better, but it's more than usable. One trick is to turn off Javascript -- it's not needed for most sites and this speeds up load times, esp. near the end when the page can seem stuck. Mobile versions of web sites work well. But even regular sites are readily viewable with either zooming, switching to landscape mode or a combination, or using Article mode (which is an excellent feature though it doesn't, and can't, work for all sites). Am I writing this review on my K3? No, I have a laptop. Do I use my K3 for surfing the web when I go out or when I'm lazy sitting on the sofa? Yes.
An easter egg: create a folder named "pictures" on your K3. You can create sub-folders under it and copy over jpg, bmp, gif, or png files. Viewing the pictures is a little glitchy, but it works.
Another area for improvement: allow mp3 files to be individually chosen to be played, and provide some rudimentary playlist means.
So, there is room for improvement, but the negatives are either minor or understandable. And, the many positives are very high.
I'm still just getting used to my K3 as it's one of those "game changer" devices. I was going to hard-copy print some emails the other day that I needed to refer to, but instead printed them to a pdf and copied it to my K3. I carry my K3 with me much of the time. I don't know how useful it may become as the novelty wears off, but it has a lot of unexplored potential.
Is The Kindle Something You Should Buy? September 4, 2010 Bornintime (The East Coast) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Is the Kindle something you should buy? I believe it comes down to 2 simple questions.
1. DO YOU LOVE (HAVE) TO READ? This is a reading device. It does other things like surf the web, read to you out loud, play MP3's - but none of those other things does it do well. I had visions of checking my email on vacation and visiting my favorite websites. After a few minutes on the browser those visions evaporated. Other people said this same thing but for some reason I didn't believe them entirely. The person at Amazon who came up with the term EXPERIMENTAL should be given a raise; that is exactly what these non-reading features are. Do not buy this device for any other reason than reading books. As a reader this thing is exceptional. It is different from every other electronics device you own. The non backlit screen is just like reading a book, more specifically a slightly glossy black and white magazine. This is the first time that I have ever seen / held a kindle. I opened the box and there was a crystal clear image on the screen that looked like a piece of paper. I confess that my hand reached for a corner of the image to see if it was a stick-on screen protector that could be pulled away. It is easy to get used to reading the Kindle because it is just like reading a book. It's lightweight and easy to hold, feels good in your hands. The page turn buttons are well placed and become second nature easily. Do you want to play with it like a toy and type on it? Again - not so great. This is for reading.
QUESTION 2: DO YOU HAVE A GOOD AMOUNT OF DISPOSABLE INCOME? Owning this will put a lien on your paycheck. You will want to fill this with your favorite books. You will want to buy any new exciting book for your Kindle. For many people spending $50 to $100 or more a month for Kindle books is not an issue. It is for me. My wife and I get a lot of use out of our public library. I reserve any new books from my favorite authors. I probably borrow 90% of the books I read. The Kindle wants to change this. It whispers to me that I really NEED to own this book rather than make that long, long trip (10 minutes, liar!) to the library or sometimes even wait WEEKS for a book. It is so easy to buy a book on the Kindle. When you visit a page on the amazon store you are LITERALLY 1 CLICK away from owning the book and reading it in 1 minute. I have never made such a quick, easy charge to my AMEX card as I did last night when I bought my first Kindle book. Amazon has the whole thing set up so nicely. It reminds me of, back in the 80's, when compact discs were first released (I'm a music lover as much as a book lover). Even though we all had hundreds of LPs and cassettes our new CD player would whisper to us that we need to buy our collection over on CD. The sound is better (it said), it's so much cooler to listen to this on the new technology. I'm experiencing Deja Vu. Reading on your new Kindle is fun, fast and convenient. We all will have to decide how much money this is worth to us.
If you answered Yes to both of these questions I have no doubt that you will love your Kindle.
New Kindle 3: Excellent! September 4, 2010 Alex Torchio 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Dear Amazon,
I have requested, through the Kindle, to write as I'm finding with my new purchase, the Kindle 3. What, never read with such enthusiasm. Comfortable to hold during the reading in any situation, fast page change, light and aesthetically beautiful. Thanks for designing such a reading tool.

Awesome September 4, 2010 Richard W. Walker 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm always a bit leary about purchasing new releases but the Kindle with Wi-Fi finally hit the magic number my heart said no more and I bit. After an agonizing month long wait and 1 weekend of screaming at the UPS website. My Kindle arrived it came on and worked exactly as advertised I downloaded the 24 books I had already collected and have begun reading through them. After almost a week with it around the house and more importantly at work I can honestly say I have no regrets for this purchase. I usually wish I had sprung for more or waited just a bit longer but I feel this was worth the price I paid and hope it continues to preform for me the same as it has so far. It fully earned my devotion 2 days in when I went to work towards the end of a book and didn't have to lug a secong 1 along with me I just went and started something new. It fits well into the back pocket of my jeans for easy carrying around which was 1 of my big points as I walk around often with things in my hands and usually carry a paperback in my pocket this does not forego that portability now begins the long and fun process of building a new library of books. Amazon has long had me as a faithful customer and barring any unforseen incidents and wretched customer service I will remain as such.
I love my Kindle.
